Maternity services of the 21st century must be tailored to meet the challenges and expectations resulting from societal and global changes. The effectiveness of a maternity service must be subjected to vigorous evaluation. New paradigms emerging in midwifery research and practice have to be addressed. Rebirth of the concept of normal birth and the emphasis on birth environment require attention of the midwives as well as the obstetricians. Continuity, communication and care remain the hallmarks of good practice in midwifery.
